Halloween at Big Rapids High School!

BRHS showed their awesome school spirit and costume creativity on Halloween!  Student council had a Halloween costume contest with prizes for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th place costumes.

BRMS Students Visit Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Forty students from Big Rapids Middle School visited the Michigan Vietnam Veterans Traveling Memorial Wall October 17th.            

The wall was in Big Rapids over the weekend at the request of Altercare of Big Rapids and honors the men and women of Michigan who served in the Vietnam War.  Ten students from each grade attended the opening ceremony.  The students were able to thank many veterans who have served our country.  BRMS thanks Altercare for bringing the wall to our community.

BRHS Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF!

The Big Rapids High School Key Club is participating in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF this year.                              

Club members are going door-to-door to ask the people of Big Rapids to contribute money for the cause.  Proceeds will be used by UNICEF to provide vaccines around the world to fight Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus.

BRHS celebrates Homecoming 2014 - "Music Genres"

The theme this year for Homecoming was "Music Genres".  Students built floats according to the theme and each class chose a music genre.  Freshman had Pop music, Sophomores had children's music, Juniors had disco and Seniors had classic rock.  The Freshman won best float while the Seniors got 2nd place.

Many students dressed up for spirit week.  Monday was "blast from the past". Tuesday was neon day, Wednesday was twin day, Thursday was support your class theme day and Friday was red and blue day!

Wednesday night was the annual Junior vs. Senior Powder Puff football game followed by the Bonfire.  Spirit week ended with the Homecoming Parade and Varsity football game at FSU's Top Taggart Field.  Participants in the parade enjoyed a hot dog roast before the game in the parking lot thanks to BRPS administration! Brad Walling and Kelsey Cushway were crowned King and Queen during half-time and the crowd enjoyed the introductions of all members of the homecoming court including:  Seniors- Brook Day, AJ Stephens, Renae Lyons, Madeline Workman, Zac Fredrick, Garrett Garner, Daniel Scsavnicki, Scott VanderSloot.  Juniors- Maddie Tassoni and Geoffrey Pisani. Sophomores- Sydni Aris and Liam McKiness.  Freshmen-  Caitlin Bomay and Connor Lee.

The formal Homecoming Dance was held in the BRHS Rotunda on Saturday night from 8:00-11:00 p.m.

BRMS Staff and Families Celebrate Homecoming

BRMS staff and families had a wonderful time supporting the Cardinals in the 2014 Big Rapids Public Schools Homecoming Parade.                    

Serving as Grand Marshals of the parade were Grace Engle, a member of the 8th grade teaching staff, and Marcus Vanhala, a retired member of the 6th grade teaching staff.

BRHS Woodwind Quintet to Perform at Devos

The Big Rapids High School Woodwind Quintet has been selected to perform at Devos Hall.              
                         
The Quintet was invited to perform at the for the prestigious Michigan Music Conference Chamber Collage Concert on Thursday, January 22^nd at DeVos Performance Hall in Grand Rapids.  The group was selected from a state-wide talent search of elementary, middle and high school band, choir and orchestra chamber ensembles based on a recorded audition sent in September.

BRMS Sixth Grade Science Students Raise Rare Creatures

Mr. Hooker's sixth grade science classes at Big Rapids Middle School are raising rare creatures from Mexico.                                                               
Axolotl, also known as Mexican salamanders, were near extinction in 2010.  Axolotl can grow to be as long as 18 inches and while they look like salamanders, Axolotl never live out of the water.  The students can't wait to see how big their Axolotl grow to be!

BRHS AP Art Classes visit Art Prize!

Big Rapids High School AP Art and Advanced art students attended the annual Art Prize art competition in Grand Rapids on Thursday, October 2nd.

The twenty-two students and five adults traveled to Grand Rapids to view and interact with the art. Students chose favorites, discussed techniques and motivation for their own personal work. There is talk of entering art prize next year within the students and they all are excited to start on their own pieces for their AP Art class.
