Big Rapids High School Students Receive Art Awards

Three Big Rapids High School students received awards for their artwork.
Madeline White, a junior at BRHS, received the top prize in the annual 4th Congressional District Art Competition.  U.S. Representative. Dave Camp, R-Midland, has been handing out the awards to local art students each year of his now 23-year-old career in Congress.

"I'm just always impressed and it's always uplifting to come in and see the artwork each year," Camp said at the Midland Center for the Arts.

White said the piece, featuring a pair of boots and a policeman's cap backed by an American flag, was inspired by her police officer father. She explained it was a tribute to his service.

"He's been wearing those boots for more than 10 years," White said.

Congratulations to BRHS students, Katie Godell and Cara Jensen for being finalist for an In God We Trust Art Contest. This contest was created to commemorate the nation motto being inscribed on our coins for the past 150 years. Cara Jensen placed 2nd and received
a prize of $1000. Katie Godell placed 3rd and
received a prize of $500. Both were invited to a
reception and awards ceremony at the Lansing
Capitol building in April.
