The Big Rapids High School Key Club trick or treat for UNICEF

The Big Rapids High School Key Club is participating again this year in trick or treat for UNICEF.

Info from Key Club International website:

By collecting donations for UNICEF through the Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF program over the years, Key Club has raised more than $6 million to support:
Iodine deficiency programs worldwide
HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland
Teen centers in Uruguay providing adolescents with job skills, education, family counseling and other social services.

This year Key Club Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF funds will support The Eliminate Project, which will provide resources and advocacy to support elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus with UNICEF and partners.

The Issue
Maternal and neonatal tetanus is a terrible tragedy.
In countries where people lack healthcare education and services, a baby can be infected with tetanus during birth and can die within days. That short lifetime is agonizing—a heartbreaking struggle to breathe and to cope and marked by convulsions triggered by the slightest sound or contact. But this disease is easily preventable.

The Eliminate Project
The Eliminate Project will support elimination of this swift, painful and highly preventable disease.
More than 100 million women of childbearing age need to be vaccinated to protect them and their future newborns. An average of $1.80 will provide 3 doses of vaccine, syringes, safe transport and storage, education of communities, training of health workers and more.
This global campaign will protect the lives of millions of mothers and their future newborns.

BRHS Homecoming!

Big Rapids High School celebrated Homecoming week with the theme of "Seasons".  "Spirit Week" began with Monday as P.J./lazy day, Tuesday was twin day, Wednesday was superhero day, Thursday was sports day and Friday was spirit day!

The "Spirit" week ended on Friday with an all day school Spirit Day.  The Cardinal Spirit day began in the Auditorium with the Senior Court Speeches to the entire student body.  Next, the voting for King and Queen took place while the Senior Court members were fresh in their minds. After voting, the "Match Game" began which sent students running all over the school looking for their matching number! The excitement was overwhelming as the students then assembled in the gym to sing the fight song and play spirit games for one of the BEST SPIRIT ASSEMBLIES EVER!

Following the assembly, there was a police presentation in the rotunda.  This presentation included several stations set up in the rotunda and outside for the students to learn about distracted driving and drinking and driving.  Students had the chance to drive a golf cart while wearing goggles that simulate being drunk to see what it is like to drive impaired.

During the lunches students were able to take their time eating, play cards, ping pong, etc.  They also had the opportunity to walk the track or play in the gym.  There was a car set up outside for "Smashing the Coyotes" and a dunk tank to throw at for teacher dunking!

After lunch, the students then walked out to the football field to view the Powder Puff football game! Next they assembled in the gym for the annual Homecoming Assembly that ended with a football game pep talk by Coach Selzer!  The first ever all day Spirit Day was great fun for the students and staff!

The Homecoming parade began at 5:30 p.m. behind the middle school and leading up to the football game at FSU's Top Taggart Field at 7:00 p.m. where the Cardinals took on the Reed City Coyotes!

The Dance was Saturday night in the Rotunda at BRHS from 8:00-11:00 p.m.

BRMS 6th Graders Learn About Timelines!

Mr. Brejcha's 6th grade social studies class at BRMS is learning about timelines in a very unique way. The students were able to get a hands-on approach through a timeline of musical devices dating from the early 1900s to the present. Many of the devices were brought in from parents. Students will be making several timelines in the next week, covering their own lives and significant events in United States history as well.

BRMS participates in the first Color Run!

On Thursday, October 1st, the Big Rapids Middle School participated in the very first Color Run! Approximately three hundred students ran around Hemlock Park and the Middle School getting sprayed with COLOR by fifty PTO, FSU, and teacher volunteers. This event was sponsored by Yoplait through a $7500 grant. Yogurt and cereal bars were available to the participants prior to the race.

The students started off with a warm-up dance to the "Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) song and ended the race with a COLOR burst (every student was able to throw a color packet up in the air). It was a beautiful, awesome day, and everybody had a blast!

Thanks to all of the participants and volunteers for making this such a huge success. Special thanks goes out to Yoplait for even making this possible!! It is great to be from BR!
